Lessons Learned from the World’s Most Expensive Typo
If you ever think you're having a bad day in the office, remember that the world's most expensive typo cost NASA $150 million.
Mariner 1 was a probe built to visit Venus to gather photos and data. But a missing hyphen in the guidance formula caused it to veer off course and self-destruct just after take-off.
A missing character, $150 million up in smoke.
This is a (very) extreme example of how mistakes can cost businesses money. But wasted budget is wasted budget, and for smaller firms, it can quickly add up.
For professional services businesses, wasted spend can often creep up in the form of inefficient ad spend.
Advertising is a highly effective way of generating leads. But if it isn't part of a balanced marketing strategy that also builds strong organic content, you're probably paying more per lead than you need to.
Whether someone finds you through an ad, a social post, or a referral, when they land on your site, they're still deciding whether to trust you.
Strong organic content demonstrates that you understand your audience's challenges, which builds trust and resolves doubt. It works best across a variety of formats. Think articles, case studies, short guides or explainers, and a link to an active LinkedIn profile.
Without it, you're spending money to send people somewhere that doesn't speak to their needs. That isn’t just a wasted click. It could also be a new customer for a competitor.
Small firms that commit to ads without the organic foundation to back them up risk burning through their budget before they even lift off.
When I work with smaller firms, I always focus on building an organic foundation first, with content that demonstrates expertise and offers genuine value, before we discuss ad campaigns.
Will ads get you leads faster? Of course. But only when they're paired with content that fills in the blanks and earns trust.
From 10 years in marketing, I've put together a guide on how to get the organic side right and build the kind of credibility that wins business, without relying on ad spend. Access it here.
